The Volkswagen ID Buzz gets a new lease on life for 2027 as the German automaker opts to resurrect its charismatic electric van after a hiatus for the 2026 model year. What’s more, a new Tourer trim level with camping gear brings the ID Buzz closer to the Westfalia-style camper of our dreams.
The 2027 Volkswagen ID Buzz stands out as the only all-electric model in the minivan segment , which also includes the Honda Odyssey, Chrysler Pacifica, and Toyota Sienna.
Volkswagen once again offers the ID Buzz as part of its lineup after dropping the electric van for the 2026 model year. Updates include two new trims and refreshed tech offerings.

Having just been introduced for the 2025 model year, it seemed for a moment that the Volkswagen ID Buzz met its untimely demise when it went on hiatus for the 2026 model year. As one of our Car of the Year finalists , that would have been a great shame. The 2027 Volkswagen ID Buzz is back, however, carrying updates aimed at improving the electric van’s user experience.
There was already lots to like about the ID Buzz when it first arrived. The electric van has charming styling and tons of clever features inside the cabin. Two-tone paint options deepen the ID Buzz’s connection to the iconic microbus of the previous century.
For all of the ID Buzz’s retro nostalgia, its driving experience is anything but old school. Electric motors deliver smooth, responsive, and linear acceleration for both RWD and AWD models, complementing a comfortable, compliant ride and agreeable handling , despite some notable understeer. Braking performance is solid, but the pedal can feel soft at low speeds.
Some of the updates start to address some of the complaints we’ve had with the ID Buzz. The steering wheel’s frustrating capacitive touch controls have now been replaced by hard buttons, but the cabin is still too touch-reliant for our tastes.
NACS compatibility and a standard adapter grant the ID Buzz wider accessibility to fast charging stations, but its limited range and charging speeds continue to leave us wanting for more.
The market badly needs funky vehicles with personality like the ID Buzz, so we’re happy to see VW’s EV return for another attempt at wooing shoppers with its cheerful looks and spacious interior.
Top-Ranked Competitors:
The 2027 Volkswagen ID Buzz returns with a choice of two powertrains: single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD. Lower trims use the single-motor setup, which develops 282 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. RWD models need 6.6 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in our test results.
Stepping up to the AWD model brings output up to 335 hp and drops the 0–60-mph time to 5.4 seconds. Both models are quicker than the FWD-only Honda Odyssey, which needs 6.8 seconds to accelerate to 60 mph. The Toyota Sienna, now standard with hybrid power, needs 7.6 seconds to launch from to 60 mph in AWD guise.
Range and Charging
The EPA has yet to evaluate the 2027 ID Buzz’s driving range, but we can look to the 2025 model’s ratings for an estimate. RWD variants returned 234 miles of range, while the all-wheel-drive ID Buzz could drive just 231 miles per charge.
All ID Buzz models are equipped with a 91-kWh battery and charge at rates up to 170 kW. Charging from 10 to 80 percent takes 26 minutes with Level 3 fast charging.
If range and charging are of utmost importance, another all-electric family hauler to consider is the Hyundai Ioniq 9 . Long Range RWD models are good for 335 miles of range, Long Range AWD models can cover 320 miles, and the Performance AWD variant can drive 311 miles per charge.
All Hyundai Ioniq 9s are powered by a 110-kWh battery pack, which can be recharged at a rate up to 232 kWh. Charging from 10 to 80 percent takes 24 minutes.
Safety Ratings and Features
Safety ratings aren’t in yet for the 2027 Volkswagen ID Buzz, but the IIHS’ ratings of the 2025 model give us an idea of what to expect. The 2025 Volkswagen ID Buzz received a top score in the only crashworthiness category evaluated and the second-highest score of Acceptable in both crash avoidance and mitigation categories.
As a family hauler, the ID Buzz indexes well as far as seat belts and child restraints are concerned, with top marks for both items.
The 2027 Volkswagen ID Buzz comes standard with the IQ Drive suite of driver assists including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and VW’s Travel Assist semi-autonomous driving technology.

Cargo Space and Interior Room
The 2027 Volkswagen ID Buzz has a spacious interior with generous legroom, especially in the very back. Cargo volume is excellent compared to both the three-row Kia EV9 and the Honda Odyssey minivan.

Volkswagen equips the 2027 ID Buzz with a standard 5.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen that’s been updated with the automaker’s latest software for the new model year.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are equipped on all versions of the ID Buzz. Eight USB-C ports, a 110V outlet beneath the passenger seat, and a 12-volt outlet in the cargo area keep everyone’s devices charged and accessories powered up.
The 2027 Volkswagen ID Buzz comes standard with a nine-speaker sound system. As an upgrade, there’s available 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio.
Stepping up to higher trims of the 2027 Volkswagen ID Buzz unlocks a head-up display and a 360-degree camera. Other available equipment includes captain’s chairs and an electrochromic panoramic roof.

Volkswagen continues to outfit every version of the 2027 ID Buzz with a power liftgate, heated and ventilated front seats with lumbar massage and thigh extenders, heated steering wheel and rear seats, and power-folding side mirrors.
Camp in the ID Buzz with the New Tourer Trim
The 2027 Volkswagen ID Buzz Tourer comes equipped with camping gear, including a fold-out mattress, window blinds, ventilation panels, outdoor chairs, and a table. VW also adds an Overnight mode designed to make sleeping in the van a little easier.
The Tourer is further decked out with a retractable tow hitch, captain’s chairs, an electrochromic smart roof, and 20-inch dark graphite wheels with black accents. However, it’s no Westfalia, and there still isn’t a pop-up roof option.
