We test everything here at MotorTrend, and sometimes that means we test things like floormats. They might not be the most exciting product in your car, but floormats are definitely among the most important. Along with becoming a safety issue if they interfere with the pedals, they can become a real eyesore when they get dirty—in fact, it’s a great barometer to tell if someone gives a damn about caring for their car.
All floormats might look the same, but not all mats are created equal. That’s why we tested the best mats available to figure out which ones you should actually buy.

What I looked For
Floormats are an interesting proposition, as they don’t really serve a purpose beyond protecting your vehicle’s carpets. However, that’s not to say that there’s a significant difference between a good pair and a bad pair. While genuine durability tests would’ve been ideal (we’ll be able to deliver those at a later date), we focused on simple performance metrics, including traction, water retention, time to install, and time to clean.
Here’s a more detailed list of our expectations for the test:
Mats should be relatively quick and easy to install
Fit and finish should be as good, if not better, than stock
Needs to be able to retain spilled liquids
Needs to be relatively easy to remove for cleaning
[The Control] F-150 SuperCrew 3Pc All-Weather Floormats
Easy to clean
Excellent fit
Coverage is lacking compared to third-party options
Time to install: 1:45.62
Fit and finish: 9/10 (not-new condition)
Slip resistance: 0.3 pound
Cleanability score: 9/10
In keeping with our standard operating procedure, we had to find a control to compare the other products against. Thankfully, our 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning still has the same factory floormats from the day we bought it. Big surprise, they’re made by Ford, and we can confirm they’re fantastic.
Ford’s mats feature thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) construction, making them durable and easy to clean. TPE excels in both respects as it is nonporous, helping to keep the mats from absorbing dirt, liquids, and even odors. As expected, the mats excelled in our cleaning test, where we messed them up with a slurry of dirt and other detritus before giving them a good power wash to see how much mud we could blast away. These almost magical material properties are made possible by a manufacturing process that doesn’t require any curing agents—which often give rubber its stickiness and porosity.
At just $225, we think very highly of Ford’s floormats. That’s all well and good, but we should note that Ford designed these mats specifically for its F-150 Lightning, so we almost expected them to be good. Many of the other mat makers you see below are working from a fairly basic laser scan of the footwells, which means the odds are stacked against them.
