2027 BMW X1 Expert Review

Even though the X1 is BMW’s smallest SUV, it’s not short on upscale design and refined dynamics. This generation of X1 was introduced for 2024 and could get a refresh for 2027 that aligns it with the German automaker’s newer models. Other luxury subcompact SUVs include the Audi Q3, Acura ADX, and Cadillac Optiq.
As the Neue Klasse design language seen on the new i3, iX3, and refreshed 7 Series rolls out across BMW’s lineup, the X1 is expected to receive a major update for 2027.

Our experience with the X1 has been mostly positive. We like how it looks, and the cabin has a genuinely premium feel—spacious, too, considering the SUV’s size.
How the X1 drives upholds its maker’s reputation for luxurious yet engaging dynamics. It’s plenty quick, even with the base engine, although the dual-clutch transmission can stutter at low speeds. Ride quality on M Sport models is stiff , another reason to stick with the standard specification.
Value is a sticking point for the X1; its starting price is high for the segment, and standard features are a bit light. The expected 2027 update could make the X1 seem more worth it.

Engines and Performance
Expect engine changes as part of the 2027 update to be minor, if any. The X1 will likely continue to use a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 that produces 241 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque for the xDrive28i, and 313 hp and 295 hp in M35i spec. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and standard AWD should carry over.
With this equipment, the X1 can run from 0 to 60 mph in about five seconds.
MPGs and Range
Unless BMW adds hybrid features to the 2027 X1, expect similar fuel economy to last year. The xDrive28i model gets about 25/34 mpg city/highway, and the M35i version 24/32 mpg. Driving range on a full fuel tank is 400 and 386 miles, respectively.
Safety and Driver Assist Features
The updated X1 should continue to include front automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high-beams, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control might remain optional but may be improved with new software.
Cargo Space and Interior Room
Since it's built using the same basic structure as before, the updated X1 should have similar interior measurements as last year.

Tech features seen in Neue Klasse vehicles could make their way into the updated X1. A parallelogram infotainment touchscreen with BMW’s latest user interface could be a highlight. The 2027 X1 could also get a slim display spanning the base of the windshield.
Expect USB-C ports and a wireless charging pad. Available upgrades could include a head-up display and Harman Kardon audio system.
When and How Much?
The updated 2027 X1 should arrive by the end of 2026. It will likely continue to be produced in Germany and start at about $45,000 before any import tariff considerations.
