A 2025 study by Grandview Research revealed that over 70 percent of car owners opted for “automatic” car washes rather than cleaning their vehicles themselves. While that statistic is disappointing, it’s no surprise that detailing enthusiasts like us are a small but dedicated group focused on perfecting every step of the process. Recently, air blowers have become a topic of discussion, as they can dry cars with virtually no risk of scratching the paint.

Many detailers have suggested that a standard leaf blower could suffice, which seemed like a plausible option to us. That’s why we obtained a leaf blower to test it against a range of smaller air blowers, determining which solution performs best—and consequently which products you should purchase.

Our Recommendations

Best Overall: Milwaukee M18 Precision Blower

Best Budget: Ryobi RY18BLCXA-0 Cordless Blower

Most Powerful: Kolenda Cordless Car Dryer

Most Compact: Wolfbox MF200

What I Looked For in an Air Blower

Air blowers present an intriguing option as they serve multiple purposes. They aren’t specifically designed for drying cars, but they are clearly capable of doing so. The main appeal of these products is their much smaller size compared to a traditional leaf blower, making them easier to store when not in use. However, we wanted to see if they could match the power and battery life offered by a more robust cordless leaf blower.

Here’s what we focused on during our testing:

It must perform well enough to blow water off your vehicle

Battery life should be sufficient to dry an entire car or SUV

The blower should not be overly large or heavy

Noise levels should be reasonable to avoid hearing damage (and keep good relations with your neighbors)

Given that all these small air blowers claim they can effectively dry a car, it was an easy choice to begin our test with a genuine leaf blower as a benchmark. That’s where we chose Ryobi’s RY40LB01K. Despite having a product name that only an engineer might appreciate, it’s a strong example that criticism of Ryobi is unwarranted.

First, getting the tool, a battery, and a charger for less than $200 total is nearly unheard of. However, that doesn’t mean Ryobi is cutting corners. In fact, we didn’t expect it to be the quietest air blower in our test. We recorded it at just 73.4 decibels, making it a full seven decibels quieter than the next best air blower—more on that later.

We should also note that, despite its lengthy name, the RY40LB01K was among the fastest at removing standing water from our test car after a standard wash.
