The Subaru Outback has been a well-known model for more than three decades, but the new, seventh-generation iteration represents a notable departure from the Outback's traditional wagon-like silhouette, adopting a more square, SUV-focused design. However, the update extends well beyond the midsize SUV's tougher exterior, as Subaru has also made substantial changes to the interior. The Outback's trim structure has been reorganized to better serve drivers seeking comfort and everyday refinement, as well as those wanting a vehicle capable of weekend trail excursions. 2026 Subaru Outback: The Fundamentals
The 2026 Subaru Outback range continues to incorporate several key features across all models, chief among them being Subaru's signature symmetrical all-wheel-drive system, which has long contributed to the Outback's broad popularity. Half of the lineup is equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter flat-four engine, achieving EPA ratings of 25/31/27 mpg city/highway/combined, while the Limited XT, Touring XT, and Wilderness trims upgrade to a more powerful and better-performing but less fuel-efficient turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four, rated at 21/29/24 mpg. Both engine options are paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
Another major highlight is Subaru's comprehensive EyeSight suite of driver assistance and active safety technologies. This means every 2026 Outback comes standard with features such as forward automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control (higher-spec Outbacks include additional EyeSight features). All models also come with adaptive LED headlights with automatic high-beams, as well as standard LED foglights to enhance visibility. The good news is that after our First Drive, we found the new 2026 Outback to be improved in nearly every aspect.
2026 Subaru Outback Premium
The Subaru Outback Premium may serve as the entry point to the lineup, but it offers solid value right from the start. Priced from $36,445, the Premium includes a strong combination of practical and comfort-oriented features. Its 18-inch alloy wheels with a dark gray finish give the Outback a rugged look, while the roof's 800-pound static load capacity makes it ideal for mounting a rooftop tent for weekend getaways.
Power comes from Subaru's 2.5-liter flat-four engine, producing 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. Although it can feel underpowered in a vehicle of this size, many drivers will find it sufficient for everyday driving tasks. Inside, the Premium features durable StarTex upholstery that is easy to clean, along with a standard 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
Perhaps the most significant enhancement, however, is Subaru's redesigned infotainment system. The brand has replaced the previous vertical touchscreen with a new 12.1-inch horizontal display paired with a much more intuitive infotainment setup. Even better, physical controls for the climate system and audio functions have been reintroduced, making daily operation far more user-friendly.
